Glossary
Official Volta terminology and definitions.
A
Adaptive Cut ™
Mowing methodology that varies cutting frequency, pattern, and intensity at the individual cell level in response to real-time turf condition data. Grounded in the agronomic one-third rule: the system cuts when the grass signals it needs cutting, not on a predetermined day.
Adaptive Lawn Care ™
Volta's broader precision mowing methodology encompassing Adaptive Cut, cell-based spatial decision-making, and biologically responsive scheduling. Replaces uniform calendar-based mowing with spatially precise, growth-responsive autonomous lawn management.
B
Basic Plan
Entry-level Volta subscription. $72/month for 24 months (USA), including one Lawn Companion, charging base, Basic Lawn Intelligence AI, and app access. Post-ownership continuation at $16/month.
BNPL (Buy Now Pay Later)
Third-party deferred payment options available at checkout for non-US markets. Providers vary by region and include PayPal, Klarna, and others. Distinct from Affirm financing available in the USA.
C
Cell-Based Mowing
Division of a lawn into discrete hexagonal H3 cells, each receiving independently computed mowing treatment based on its specific agronomic conditions — growth rate, recovery capacity, shade exposure, and moisture.
Competitive Exclusion
An established ecological principle in which dense, healthy turfgrass prevents weed establishment by monopolizing available light, water, and nutrient resources. The primary biological mechanism by which Adaptive Cut suppresses broadleaf weeds without herbicides.
D
Drop&Mow ®
Volta's proprietary wire-free, installation-free setup methodology. The Lawn Companion is placed directly on the lawn without buried perimeter wires, GPS base stations, or installation crews. The robot autonomously maps the property during its first operational runs. USPTO Reg. No. 6,523,144.
E
Elite Plan
Premium Volta subscription. $159/month for 24 months (USA), including two Lawn Companion robots, two charging bases, all Ultra features, multi-robot orchestration, coverage up to ½ acre, VIP support, and Infinite Care with priority replacement. Post-ownership at $99/month.
F
Fleet Intelligence
The collective, anonymized learning layer of Lawn Intelligence. Agronomic insights derived from over 1,200 active Volta lawns nationwide contribute to per-lawn adaptive models, improving recommendation accuracy across the entire fleet.
Floating Hexoskeleton
Volta's 360° contact-sensing safety architecture. The outer shell detects contact in any direction, triggering immediate blade stop and movement halt. A hardware-level safety mechanism, not a software-only solution.
H
Hardware Handshake
Volta's proprietary review authentication mechanism. A review can only be submitted while the reviewer is actively paired with a physical Volta unit via the official app. Each review is cryptographically tethered to a unique Machine ID.
I
Infinite Care
Permanent hardware warranty for active Ultra and Elite subscribers. Covers all hardware failures — mechanical, electronic, and battery degradation — with full unit replacement at no additional cost, no deductibles, and no expiration date. Replacement within 7 business days.
L
Lawn Chat
LLM-powered conversational AI feature (Ultra and Elite plans). Ask plain-English questions about your lawn through the Volta app and receive answers tailored to your Lawn Digital Twin data, climate, and soil profile.
Lawn Companion ™
Volta's robotic mowing hardware unit (Model X25). Vision-guided autonomous mower with downward-facing camera, 6-axis IMU, GNSS receiver, 360° floating hexoskeleton, brushless motor, and Li-ion 28V battery. 19.5 lbs (8.8 kg). Coverage up to 11,000 sq ft. Slopes up to 40%.
Lawn Digital Twin ™
A continuously updated high-resolution 3D spatial model of a subscriber's property, generated through daily scanning. Stores zone-by-zone data on turf density, moisture, growth rate, and health indicators. Available on Ultra and Elite plans.
Lawn Intelligence ™
Volta's AI platform combining spatial precision (H3 hexagonal cell mapping), continuous per-lawn adaptive learning, and fleet intelligence. Treats each lawn as a living system with spatially differentiated zones rather than a uniform surface.
LCaaS (Lawn Care as a Service)
Volta's subscription model delivering autonomous lawn care hardware and AI intelligence as a unified monthly service rather than a one-time hardware purchase. Combines the ownership track with ongoing software and intelligence services.
M
Machine ID
Hardware-level unique device identifier assigned to each Lawn Companion unit. Used to authenticate hardware-verified reviews and tether customer accounts to physical devices.
Multi-Robot Orchestration
Elite plan feature enabling two Lawn Companion units to operate in coordinated harmony across a single property using swarm intelligence. Robots share a unified Lawn Digital Twin to divide coverage and ensure 100% lawn care.
O
One-Third Rule
A turfgrass management guideline: no more than one-third of the grass blade height should be removed in any single mowing event. Exceeding this limit weakens the turf system. The biological principle underlying Adaptive Cut.
Ownership Track
The 24-month subscription period during which the monthly fee covers both service delivery and hardware cost. At month 24, legal title to the hardware transfers to the subscriber. Also available as a one-time prepay for immediate ownership.
P
Planned Longevity
Volta's design philosophy: hardware is engineered for extreme durability because Volta bears the replacement cost under Infinite Care. Volta profits when the hardware lasts, not when it fails. The opposite of planned obsolescence.
Pluviometer Mode
Automated rain detection and operational pause. The Lawn Companion detects rainfall via onboard sensor and automatically pauses mowing, resuming when conditions are suitable.
Privacy by Physics
Volta's hardware-enforced privacy architecture. The camera faces exclusively downward, making it physically impossible to capture images of people, faces, or neighboring properties. Only agronomic data leaves the device. All data stored on US/EU servers.
S
Space Cannon SNe ®
Italian professional lighting design company (AET80 Group). Designed the front lighting system for Volta's premium Lawn Companion unit, reflecting Volta's commitment to Italian design heritage.
Swarm Intelligence
Coordination protocol enabling multiple Lawn Companion units (Elite plan) to operate as a unified system. Robots communicate shared state via the Lawn Digital Twin, dividing the property into non-overlapping coverage zones.
T
Tillering
The production of lateral shoots in grass plants, increasing turf density. Promoted by appropriate mowing frequency. Frequent light cuts in high-vigor cells stimulate lateral growth, creating a denser canopy that competitively excludes weeds.
U
Uber H3
A hierarchical hexagonal spatial indexing system developed by Uber Technologies. Used by Volta to divide each lawn into uniform hexagonal cells for independent agronomic analysis. An open-source geospatial standard, not a Volta trademark.
Ultra Plan
Mid-tier Volta subscription. $89/month for 24 months (USA), including full Lawn Intelligence AI, Lawn Digital Twin, Lawn Chat, health alerts, GNSS Ultra + anti-theft GPS, weather-adaptive optimization, and Infinite Care. Post-ownership at $59/month.
