Operative Conditions

Volta Lawn Intelligence Inc.
A Delaware Corporation · United States of America

Effective Date: April 9, 2026 · Last Updated: April 9, 2026

Overview

These Operative Conditions define the environmental, physical, and infrastructural requirements under which the Volta Lawn Companion™ is designed to function correctly and safely. They form part of the Volta Terms of Service and are incorporated by reference into Section 2.3 thereof.

By completing your subscription, you represent and warrant that your lawn and property meet all applicable conditions listed herein. Refund and replacement eligibility under Section 6 of the Terms of Service is assessed against these conditions using Telemetry Data as the primary factual record.

1. Lawn Area

ParameterSpecification
Maximum coverage per unit11,000 sq ft (~1,000 m²)
Maximum coverage — Elite plan (2 units)~½ acre (~2,000 m²)

The Lawn Companion™ is designed for residential lawns. It is not approved for agricultural, commercial farming, sports field, or municipal use. Lawns significantly exceeding the stated coverage limits per unit may result in incomplete mowing cycles and degraded Lawn Intelligence™ performance; such conditions do not constitute a product defect.

2. Terrain and Slope

ParameterSpecification
Maximum slope40% gradient (21.8°)
Surface typeNatural turf (grass)

The Lawn Companion™ operates on natural grass surfaces. It is not designed for artificial turf, gravel, mulch, bare soil, sand, or hard surfaces. Operation on slopes exceeding 40% gradient (21.8°) may cause instability, reduced traction, incomplete coverage, and potential hardware damage. Such conditions are outside the Operative Conditions and do not qualify for hardware replacement under Section 6 of the Terms of Service.

Wheel traction may be significantly reduced on surfaces contaminated with mud or wet soil deposits. Operating on heavily muddy terrain can affect stability, coverage consistency, and navigation accuracy, particularly on slopes. Such surface conditions are outside the Operative Conditions. The device is capable of autonomous edge detection and does not require a perimeter wire, GPS base station, or manual boundary mapping.

3. Grass Type and Lawn Condition

Volta is designed to maintain and improve healthy lawns — not to recover neglected ones. The Lawn Companion™ cutting height is adjustable between 20 mm (0.8″) and 60 mm (2.4″). Before activating your subscription, grass must be at or below 60 mm (2.4″) — the maximum cutting height. A well-prepared lawn at or under this height is the foundation for everything Volta does best. Lawns that are significantly overgrown beyond this threshold, heavily thatched, or in a state of severe neglect at activation are outside the Operative Conditions.

The Lawn Companion™ is compatible with all common residential grass types found in the United States, including but not limited to:

  • Bermuda grass
  • Kentucky Bluegrass
  • Tall Fescue
  • Fine Fescue
  • Zoysia grass
  • St. Augustine grass
  • Centipede grass
  • Ryegrass (perennial and annual)
  • Buffalo grass

Lawns with a mix of grass types are supported. Performance of Lawn Intelligence™ may vary by grass type, growth rate, and seasonal conditions. Variation in outcomes due to grass biology does not constitute a product defect.

4. Obstacles and Lawn Complexity

The Lawn Companion™ is designed to navigate around common residential obstacles. The following conditions are within operative scope:

  • Trees, garden beds, and planted areas with defined edges
  • Fixed structures such as garden furniture, sheds, and play equipment
  • Gentle terrain undulations within the slope limit

The following conditions are outside operative scope and may result in degraded performance or hardware damage not covered under Infinite Care™:

  • Dense obstacle fields that leave less than 24 inches (60 cm) of clear passage
  • Heavily shaded areas where grass is absent or severely sparse
  • Lawns with extensive debris (rocks, roots, large branches) left uncleared on the surface
  • Steep drop-offs, retaining walls, or unguarded elevation changes greater than 4 inches (10 cm)

Customers are responsible for maintaining the lawn free of debris and ensuring obstacles are stable and consistently positioned to support reliable autonomous navigation.

5. Charging Base Position and Crossing Requirements

5.1 Charging Base Placement

The charging base station must be positioned on a flat, grassy area. A clear radius of at least 3 meters (10 feet) of open, unobstructed lawn is required in the area directly in front of the base. This clearance is necessary for the Lawn Companion™ to dock and undock reliably. The base must not be placed:

  • Against a wall, fence, or structure without adequate frontal clearance
  • On gravel, paving, decking, or any non-grass surface
  • In a position where the approach path is obstructed by steps, slopes, or persistent debris
  • In areas with poor or no Wi-Fi signal coverage

5.2 Zone Crossings

Where the lawn is divided by driveways, pathways, patios, or other hard surfaces, the Lawn Companion™ must cross between zones over a continuous grass surface or a dedicated crossing strip. For each crossing point, a clear grass corridor of at least 3 meters (10 feet) in length and sufficient width for the unit to navigate is required both before and after the crossing.

Crossing points that lack adequate clearance, that involve abrupt elevation changes, or that pass over loose materials (gravel, mulch, bark) are outside the Operative Conditions and may result in navigation errors or hardware damage not covered under Infinite Care™.

6. Connectivity Requirements

ParameterSpecification
Wi-Fi standard802.11 b/g/n
Wi-Fi frequency2.4 GHz
Connectivity requirementActive Wi-Fi connection required, at minimum in proximity to the charging base station
App requirementCompatible smartphone running the official Volta app (iOS or Android)

The Lawn Companion™ requires an active internet connection for Lawn Intelligence™ features, telemetry transmission, remote monitoring, and app-based control. Core autonomous mowing functions may continue in a degraded offline mode, but Lawn Intelligence™ insights, health alerts, and Lawn Chat™ require connectivity. Connectivity failures due to the Customer's internet infrastructure are not covered under Infinite Care™ and do not constitute grounds for a refund.

7. Power and Charging

ParameterSpecification
Charging base input100–240V AC, 50/60 Hz, 1.5A
Charging base output32V DC / 1.8A
Charging base IP ratingIP68
BatteryLi-ion 2 Ah, 28V
Charge/discharge ratio~1:1

The charging base station must be installed outdoors on a stable, level surface with access to a standard outdoor-rated electrical outlet. The base is weather-rated to IP68. The Customer is responsible for ensuring a safe and appropriate installation location for the charging base. Damage resulting from improper placement, flooding beyond IP68 limits, or electrical installation issues is not covered under Infinite Care™.

8. Use Restrictions

The Lawn Companion™ is intended exclusively for residential outdoor use in the United States. The following uses are expressly outside the Operative Conditions:

  • Agricultural or commercial farming applications
  • Sports fields, golf courses, or municipal greenspaces
  • Operation by persons under 18 years of age without adult supervision
  • Modification, disassembly, or tampering with any hardware component
  • Use in jurisdictions where autonomous outdoor robots are restricted or prohibited

9. Changes to Operative Conditions

Volta reserves the right to update these Operative Conditions as the Lawn Companion™ hardware and Lawn Intelligence™ platform evolve. Existing subscribers will be notified of any material changes that affect their current operative environment.
