All you need to know to predict the efficacy of Volta in your yard.
The Volta X25 can maintain lawns up to ¼ acre (11,000 sq ft). For larger properties, you can deploy multiple X25 units to work together. Most of our users have lawns around 1/10 acre (3,000–5,000 sq ft).
Hand over your lawn to Volta — as long as it's a lawn, not a "potato field" in disguise. Volta works best on lawns with a healthy, even grass surface — not on rugged terrain. The grass zone should be clearly defined, with distinct boundaries separating it from non-grass areas. Ambiguous edges may trigger safety mode. For best results and aesthetics, maintain well-marked borders. If you have small or delicate plants, be sure to physically protect them. And if you have pools or ponds, make sure they are securely and clearly delimited for safety.
Your yard should be mostly flat and free from trenches or terraced slopes exceeding 40%. Areas with steep drops must be physically blocked to prevent accidents. Volta is not suitable for rooftops, balconies, or elevated areas where it could fall.
A strong Wi-Fi signal is required at the location of the charging base. Ideally, your entire yard should have Wi-Fi coverage to enable features like high-precision operation, real-time updates, and remote access. If coverage is limited, we recommend installing an affordable Wi-Fi extender — it’s a future-proof upgrade that also benefits other outdoor smart devices.
Make sure you have a flat, grassy area with at least a 3-meter (10-feet) radius in the following spots:
A) Directly in front of the charging base
B) Before and after any zones where your Lawn Companion™ crosses paths, driveways, or transitions
This ensures smooth navigation and reliable docking.
Advantages
Volta Lawn Intelligence™ is the cutting edge of AI applied to lawncare. Here is why.
Rhizomes send out underground shoots that fill gaps fast — no reseeding required in bare spots.
Deep roots access hidden water reserves, keeping your lawn green longer with less watering.
From backyard barbecues to daily play, rhizomes help your lawn recover quickly from heavy use.
Turfs rich in rhizomes, use up to 30% less water than turfs without a dense root system — saving you money and helping the planet.
A dense, vigorous lawn leaves no room for alien weeds — meaning fewer chemicals — saving you money and helping the planet.
Stronger roots absorb nutrients better, reducing the need for fertilizers and treatments. This works in a magic combo with Volta micro-clippings, that leaves all your nutrients on your lawn — saving you money and helping the planet.
A thicker, healthier lawn naturally discourages pests like ticks, creating a safer yard for family and pets.
A lush, dense carpet of grass that looks stunning year-round — polished, vibrant.
Mowing vs Volta Grasscycling
Mowing is the periodic act of cutting down the grass - typically grass grows between one cut and the next.
Old Mowing
Volta Lifestyle
Attributes
Force. Fast execution speed. Un-aware back-and-forth.
You take care of lawn
Done weekly or bi-weekly by you or a service crew (or robot mower). Big fanfare.
Lawn takes care of you
Volta Lawn Companion daily scans, analyzes with AI, does micro-trims in selected zones. Silent competence.
Grass stress
Between cuts the grass competes for light. It wastes energy in fast vertical growth, not in density or in root system.
Grass relax
Always removes only the very top millimiters, far exceeding the 1/3 rule, so grass is never stressed. Grass invests in density and good roots.
How
Stripe lines to optimize mowing time.
Grass blades are bent down in lines, hiding mistakes instead of correcting them.
How
Selective AI-controlled omnidirectional movements to follow turf science.
Precisely trims where necessary, keeping every area uniform like a golf course.
Clippings
Clippings are removed, impoverishing the soil.
If mulched, a sudden heavy layer sits on short blades, causing acidification (and long clippings around).
Clippings
Continuous micro-clippings reintegrated into the turf.
They quickly decompose, nourishing the soil and maintaining balance (N:P:K ≈ 4:1:2.5)
Effect on Grass
Vertical competition dominates.
Sparse blades, weak and shallow roots.
Effect on Grass
Volta “teaches” grass to invest in density and root system.
Many blades and a strong, deep root system.
Final Effect
Periodically ready lawn - good looking from distance but not dense. Periodically not ready: hosts long clippings, insects ticks.
Final Effect
Always ready lawn. Uniform and dense. Perfectly nourished and with a great water-keeping root system. Sunlight dominates.
Nice to know
Features that make your Volta unique
Yes! If the edges of your yard are level with the lawn, you can enable the “push to border” option. Your Lawn Companion™ will then perform special maneuvers to trim the grass neatly along the edges. Just make sure not to use this option in the presence of steps, pools, or other drop-offs to keep Volta safe.
Yes — Volta is fully waterproof, and there’s no need to cover or protect the charging base. In fact, if you wish, your Lawn Companion™ can even work in the rain.
Your Lawn Companion™ is equipped with a highly accurate rain sensor. By default, it stays safely in the base during rainfall and waits until the lawn is dry again. If you prefer, you can enable the rain mode, but for the best mowing results your Lawn Companion™ performs at its peak on dry ground.
Absolutely! Your Lawn Companion™ is equipped with a front LED that allows it to operate even at night. By default, it returns to the base when it gets dark and waits for daylight, but you can enable night mode if you prefer. This way, your lawn care can continue around the clock.
Yes — and it takes care of itself too! Your Lawn Companion™ has a smart battery protection system that helps extend its lifespan. If the internal temperature gets too high, it will wait safely in the base before heading out again. Placing the base in a shaded area can also help in these situations.
Yes! Thanks to its front camera, your Lawn Companion™ can “see” ahead and detect obstacles on the lawn. That’s why it’s important to keep the camera lens clean. You don’t need to do this often — but a quick check from time to time, especially after heavy rain, helps keep everything running smoothly.
Not at all! Your Lawn Companion™ is designed to ignore natural elements any mower can safely pass over — like leaves, twigs, or dry grass. A perfect lawn isn’t required. It will simply avoid areas where grass isn’t clearly detectable, such as spots completely covered by leaves. Plus, the adjustable “confidence” setting in the app lets you decide how cautious your Lawn Companion™ should be in these situations.
Absolutely! Your Volta connects to the internet, and through the app you can monitor its status anytime, anywhere. For the best experience, we recommend strong Wi-Fi coverage across your entire yard.
Your Volta can’t be reconfigured by anyone other than the registered owner, so a thief won’t be able to use it. If Volta is connected to the internet, you will also be able to see its location in the app.
Autonomy
Your Lawn Companion™ is designed to work fully autonomously.
Yes, your Lawn Companion™ starts exploring and learning with AI. It may encounter some tricky points during the initial exploration phase but, like a pet, Lawn Intelligence remembers those tricky points. Then it dynamically adjusts to the ever changing environment of your yard.
It depends on the complexity of your yard. For a single, simple area, just a few mowing sessions are enough. If you have multiple zones connected by crossings, your Lawn Companion™ may need to travel through each crossing and explore the different areas a few times to build its full picture. Either way, Volta is fully operational from the very first moment!
Yes, your Lawn Companion™ learns the base position very quickly after setup. Sometimes you see it moving around in your yard, sometimes back sleeping in the base. This is your new yard with your Lawn Companion™ around! And the grass is always-ready!
Of course! You can teach your Lawn Companion™ to cross the driveway at the point you choose. Once set, it will seamlessly care for both areas on its own — no extra effort required.
Yes — your Lawn Companion™ leaves the base as soon as it’s charged and ready to work. Just make sure there are no obstacles behind the base that could block its maneuver. If something is in the way, Volta will stop for safety and notify you through the app.
A typical mowing session lasts about an hour, though it may vary depending on the grass height, blade setting, and layout of your yard.
Setup
Installing and setting up Volta is simple and fast.
Installation is super easy! Just switch on your Volta, plug in the charging base, connect Volta to the internet, and set up your property through the app. After that, your Volta is ready to get to work!
Not always! In fact, if your lawn is already bordered by non-grassy areas, you can set the geofence a little wider than the actual perimeter. But if you’re defining a lawn area without clear boundaries, you’ll need to be precise when setting the geofence.
Not at all! If your lawn is one continuous grassy area, Your Lawn Companion™ will explore it on its own. For multiple areas, you just need to record the crossing points. You can also move Your Lawn Companion™ by hand to speed things up if you like — but it’s completely optional.
It’s simple! Just remove Volta from the charging base, switch it off using the red button, then turn it back on.
Crossings allow Your Lawn Companion™ to travel across a non-grassy area to move between different parts of your yard. Choose a flat, obstacle-free spot no longer than 6 meters. Then just follow the step-by-step instructions in the app: your Lawn Companion™ will go back and forth a few times and ask you for confirmation. After that, everything is set — you won’t need to do anything else!
Absolutely! With the app, you can schedule your Lawn Companion™’s work day by day. For the best performance, we recommend setting longer, continuous time windows rather than many short ones. For example, running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. is better than splitting it into multiple one-hour slots.
Absolutely! Just bring Volta and its charging base to the new yard, plug in the base, and switch Volta on. Then, connect through the app and follow the steps to create a new property. Once saved, Volta will remember each property, so you can easily move it back and forth without any problems.
It’s easy — just turn the orange central knob under your Volta’s cover to set the cutting height. The right level depends on your personal preference, but if you’re starting with relatively tall grass, we recommend adjusting gradually: begin with a higher blade setting and lower it gradually over the course of several weeks until you reach your desired look.
Maintenance
Easily keep your Volta running smoothly and fully operational.
Maintenance is quick and easy! Just check that the wheels, blades, camera lens and charging contacts are clean. For the best performance, we recommend replacing the blades every three months.
Absolutely! Volta is built to stay outdoors during the mowing season — rain or shine — and only needs to be brought inside when the season ends.
Replacing the blades is easy: simply unscrew them with a Phillips screwdriver, swap in the new blades, and screw them back on. Note: it’s completely normal for the blades to feel loose after tightening — once the motor spins, they’ll be pushed outward into the correct position.
Absolutely — and it’s easy! Just follow the step-by-step procedure shown in this video:
Not at all! While resting on the base overnight, your Lawn Companion™ processes what it learned during the day and downloads software updates. You can leave it on without any worries — it’s the best way to keep your Volta smart and always up to date.
Yes! Here’s how: turn on your Volta and wait a few minutes so it can get a strong GPS signal. In the meantime, move the base to the new desired spot and power it on. Place your Volta manually on the base, then let it leave as usual — or send it out right away from the app. Once it exits, your Volta will rotate a few times to calibrate and record the new base direction. If the GPS signal is strong enough, the new position will be updated automatically. You can always double-check in the app and adjust manually if needed.
App usage
No worries — this is easy to solve. Just log out of the app and log back in using the same account you used when setting up your Volta.
First, make sure the app is up to date by checking your app store. Try logging out, clearing the cache, and logging back in. If the issue continues, contact our support team at support@volta.it or on WhatsApp at +39 351 704 6215, and let us know the model of your smartphone or tablet — we’ll be happy to help.
It’s simple! To move existing points, just press and hold a point, then drag it to the new position. To add new points, simply tap where you want them. Remember — keep the geofence as simple as possible, there’s no need to replicate the exact shape of your yard!
For smooth, responsive communication with your Lawn Companion™, both your smartphone and Volta need a strong internet connection. If Volta is in a part of the yard with weak Wi-Fi, the connection may feel slow or irregular. To get the best experience, make sure your yard has reliable Wi-Fi coverage.
Absolutely! Through the app, you can register multiple Wi-Fi networks on your Lawn Companion™. It will remember them and automatically pick the best one depending on where it is in the yard.
Common Solutions
No worries — your Lawn Companion™ has simply entered lawn protection mode. You can check in the app to see the reason for the pause. Make sure the wheels, blades, and front camera lens are clean and intact, that your Volta is on a clearly visible grassy surface, and that there are no holes or physical obstacles in its way. If the blue button LED is flashing quickly, just press it twice to make your Volta go back to work.
That’s completely normal! Your Lawn Companion™ aligns carefully with its base to ensure perfect docking and optimal charging — keeping it always ready for the next mowing session.
Don’t worry — this is easy to fix. First, check that the charging contacts on both the Lawn Companion™ and the base are clean. Make sure the base is properly powered, and if you’re using the extension cord, verify the cable connection as shown in the video below. Finally, after switching off the Lawn Companion™, carefully turn over both the Lawn Companion™ and the base to check that the power cables are intact and securely connected.
This can happen if one of the blades is missing or damaged. After switching off your Volta, check that all blades are present and in good condition. Check also that the back wheel is free to move.
This simply means your Lawn Companion™ has entered a protection mode. Open the app to see the reason. To get it going again, just place it back on the grass and press the blue button twice.
It’s easy to ensure reliable docking. First, check in the app that the base position matches its actual location — you can update it if needed. Keep the base clean, visible, and free of obstacles around it. If you have multiple work areas, set up one or more crossings so your Lawn Companion™ can return to the base autonomously. And whenever you place your Volta on the base by hand, make sure it’s aligned straight.
No worries — this can sometimes happen, especially in the early morning. The condensation will disappear on its own after a short time.
Your Lawn Companion™ is designed to handle these with ease: it first tries to free itself, and if not possible, stops safely and lets you know via the app. Over time, it learns and avoids tricky spots, making each mow smarter than the last.
No worries — this is easy to fix. Just place your Volta manually on the base, making sure it’s straight. The next time it leaves, it will run a quick calibration and record the correct docking direction.
That’s a safety measure your Lawn Companion™ takes when it’s unsure about completing the crossing. Check in the app that the crossing has the right length and that there’s clear grass without obstacles at both the start and end points. Also make sure the crossing itself is free of obstacles and that the wheels don’t slip while moving across. If the crossing is too close to the virtual boundary (geofence), we recommend either widening the geofence or moving the crossing further inside.
Your Lawn Companion™ is designed to stop in front of any artificial obstacle, including turf pavers. However, if the grass growing between them is very tall, it may hide the blocks and Volta could drive over them. We recommend keeping that grass trimmed low so your Lawn Companion™ can correctly detect and avoid the blocks.
