1. Overview

Volta Lawn Intelligence Inc. ("Volta," "we," "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share information when you use our website, mobile app, and the Lawn Companion device (collectively, the "Services").

This Privacy Policy also describes your privacy rights. More information about your rights, and how to exercise them, is set out in Section 8 ("Your Rights and Choices").

2. Privacy by Physics

The Lawn Companion uses a downward-facing camera that captures only agronomic data. The camera physically cannot capture faces, license plates, or property interiors. This is not a policy commitment alone — it is a hardware constraint built into the device's physical design.

3. Data We Collect

3.1 Agronomic Data

Collected by the robot's downward-facing camera and sensors:

  • Turf surface imagery (grass, soil, ground-level objects)
  • Growth pattern metrics
  • Spatial mapping data (property boundaries, obstacle positions)
  • Environmental conditions (temperature, rain detection)

3.2 Operational Telemetry

  • Battery status and charging cycles
  • Mowing session data (area covered, duration)
  • Device health and performance metrics

3.3 Account Information

  • Name and email address
  • Property address and service location
  • Subscription plan and payment information

3.4 Website & App Data

  • Standard web and mobile analytics (page views, session data, feature usage)
  • Cookie data (see our Cookie Policy)

4. How We Use Your Data

  • Providing and improving your lawn care service
  • Building and refining your lawn's spatial model
  • Contributing to Fleet Intelligence (aggregated, anonymized — see Section 5)
  • Customer support and communication
  • Billing and account management
  • Research and development
  • Detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, or violations of our Terms of Service
  • Complying with legal obligations

5. Fleet Intelligence & Aggregated Data

Lawn data is aggregated across Volta's fleet to improve the Lawn Intelligence platform. Before aggregation, data is anonymized — it is disassociated from your account and property identifiers. We do not share or sell individual lawn data with third parties for marketing purposes.

6. Data Sharing

We do not sell personal information. We may share data with:

  • Authorized service dealers — for hardware service on your equipment
  • Cloud infrastructure providers — for secure data storage and processing
  • Payment processors — to fulfill billing and subscription management
  • Analytics providers — to improve app and service performance (using anonymized or aggregated data where possible)
  • Law enforcement or regulatory authorities — when required by law, court order, or to protect the safety of our users or the public
  • Successors in a corporate transaction — in the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction; we will notify you via app or email before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy

7. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures designed to protect your personal data from unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. These measures include:

  • Encryption in transit and at rest — All data transmitted between your device, the Lawn Companion, and our servers is encrypted using industry-standard TLS. Stored data is encrypted at rest using AES-256.
  • Access controls — Access to personal data is restricted to Volta employees and contractors who require it to perform their job functions, governed by the principle of least privilege.
  • Data minimization — We collect only the data necessary to deliver and improve our Services, and we do not retain it longer than necessary.
  • Security monitoring — We operate continuous monitoring and alerting systems to detect unauthorized access or anomalous activity.
  • Retention periods — Agronomic and operational telemetry is retained for the duration of your active subscription, plus up to 12 months thereafter to support seasonal analysis and service continuity. Account information is retained for as long as your account remains active and for up to 3 years after account closure, as required for legal and billing purposes. You may request earlier deletion at any time (see Section 8).
  • Incident response — In the event of a data breach that affects your personal data, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law, including within 72 hours where required under GDPR.

Despite these measures, no system is perfectly secure. We encourage you to use a strong, unique password for your Volta account and to contact us immediately at support@volta.ai if you suspect unauthorized access.

8. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live and the laws that apply in your country or state of residence, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data. We strive to honor all requests promptly and in accordance with applicable law.

To exercise any of the rights below, you or an authorized agent may submit a request by emailing support@volta.ai with the subject line "Privacy:" followed by your request. After we receive your request, we may verify your identity before processing it. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.

Right to Know

You have the right to know what categories of personal data Volta collects about you, the purposes for which it is used, and the categories of third parties with whom it is shared.

Right to Access & Data Portability

You have the right to request a copy of the personal data we hold about you. In certain circumstances and subject to applicable law, you may also have the right to receive that data in a portable, machine-readable format.

Right to Deletion

You have the right to request deletion of your personal data. You may also delete individual mowing sessions and lawn maps directly within the app; these will be removed from your account immediately and deleted from our systems within 30 days. Note that we may retain certain data as required by law or for legitimate business purposes such as fraud prevention and dispute resolution.

Right to Correction

You have the right to request correction of inaccurate personal data we hold about you. You can update most account information directly in the app settings.

Right to Object or Restrict Processing

You have the right to object to, or request restriction of, certain types of processing of your personal data, including processing based on legitimate interests or direct marketing. If you object to direct marketing, we will stop using your data for that purpose immediately.

Right to Withdraw Consent

Where our processing of your personal data is based on your consent, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.

GDPR (EEA & UK Residents)

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or UK GDPR, including the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

Where Volta transfers your personal data outside the EEA or UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards, including Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission, to ensure your data remains adequately protected.

CCPA (California Residents)

If you are a California resident, you have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know, delete, and opt out of the sale of personal information. Volta does not sell personal information. You may submit a request to exercise your CCPA rights at support@volta.ai or by calling our toll-free number listed on our Contact page. We will respond within 45 days.

Other U.S. State Privacy Laws

Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, and other states with applicable consumer privacy laws have rights similar to those described above. Please contact us at support@volta.ai to exercise your rights.

9. Children's Privacy

Our Services are not directed toward children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal data to us, please contact us at support@volta.ai and we will promptly investigate and delete the data if appropriate.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make material changes, we will notify subscribers via the app or email prior to the changes taking effect, and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
